Why the pattern of NET English exam question is unpredictable?

Clearing NET exam is the aim of most of students who want to join as Assistant Professors of English in various Government colleges and Universities.

But what makes NET difficult is its unpredictability. If you are a cricket fan I wish you are, you would know that sometimes we get a high scoring game, we see lusty shots from the willow all over the park raining fours and sixes. We love to see sixes because we want it. Similarly if the question paper is normal we see a lot of expected questions. The cut off will be sky high and you will be sure of the result. Most pundits of English literature would love to have such type of question paper where a significant chunk of questions is from classics of literature and history of literature.

There are also some other matches where you can see hardly a six being hit. In these low scoring matches luck plays a higher role. Similarly in some question papers no one knows the answers for majority of the questions. Because of the toughness, the cut off becomes very low. Now comes the significance of paper 1 in the exam. If you are good in aptitude, polity, environment and ecology you will get a good score in paper 1 this will boost the chance of your selection. As there is no negative marking you have to make intelligent guesses for all the questions. Luck plays a major role in this type of question paper. No matter how hard or smart you work, you will not be able to answer all the questions 100%  correct.  The important fact is that you should know all the answers to the questions which everyone knows. It is a competition and  UGC wants to select only 6% of all the appeared candidates.

If you want to appear in the next attempt keep working daily. Give equal importance to all parts, Try solving previous year question papers. Most importantly keep reading from the authentic sources. If you rely on Question Bank of some guide book. The chances are that questions asked in the book will never be asked in the NET Exam and you will be wasting your precious hours. For example take the Pre- Shakespearean dramatist, there will be list of twenty insignificant writers which you will find it difficult to remember and recollect. Even if you read about one writer you should be able to remember his name in the exam hall. You should be thorough with the titles of all the works he has written. If the work is famous then you should know the year of publication, plot, names of characters, important quotes etc. When travelling in metro or bus keep thinking about the works of the writer, it is good to recollect as many times as possible. Nothing is difficult to achieve. Keep working. All the best.
